Emerging Screenwriters Panel: Cracking Your First Script

Panel Discussion

Write Room is returning in 2024!

Come join us for a panel discussion with 3 emerging screenwriters as they discuss their screenwriting experiences and careers in the film industry.

Toi Pōneke Art Centre, Vicky Pope and Rob Sarkies are excited to announce the continuation of the Write Room Screenwriting Residency in 2024 with the support of Wellington City Council Aho Tini 2030 Arts, Culture and Creativity Strategy.

The Write Room programme supports a Wellington screenwriter to undertake a 12-week residency to develop a draft of their feature film screenplay with the support of experienced industry mentors. It also offers an emerging film producer the chance to shadow the process in order to gain insight into the development process.

To launch the 2024 residency, we will be holding a panel discussion with 2023 Write Room resident Ella Gilbert (Rongowhakaata, Ngati Kaipoho, Ngati Kahungunu), Will Agnew (2022 Wellington resident) and Paloma Schneideman (2021 applicant) about their experiences writing their first feature length scripts.

This will also be a valuable opportunity to find out how the Write Room programme works in practice and get first-hand knowledge of what these writers gained from the experience, alongside the practical challenges they have each faced in their screenwriting careers so far.

Write Room founders Vicky Pope (Savage, Gardening with Soul) and Rob Sarkies (Out of the Blue, Two Little Boys, Scarfies) will join the panel to discuss the process of mentoring writers through the program, and their perspective as readers of the applications that come in each year.

Join us all for a drink and chat afterwards.

Further details of the program and 2024 application process will be released at the launch event and on the Toi Pōneke website.

  • Applications for the emerging film producer internship will be due by 28 July 2023

  • Applications for the screenwriting residency will be due by 23 October 2023.

The 2024 Write Room Screenwriters Residency will take place over Feb-April 2024
