Write Room is returning in 2025!
Come join us for a panel discussion with the current Write Room residents and established Wellington filmmakers Rob and Duncan Sarkies as they discuss their writing partnerships and process.
Toi Pōneke Art Centre, Vicky Pope and Rob Sarkies are excited to announce the 2025 Write Room Screenwriting Residency, with the support of Wellington City Council Aho Tini 2030 Arts, Culture and Creativity Strategy.
The Write Room programme supports a Wellington screenwriter to undertake a 12-week residency to develop a draft of their feature film screenplay with the support of experienced industry mentors. It also offers an emerging film producer the chance to shadow the process in order to gain insight into the development process.
To launch the 2025 residency, we will be holding a panel discussion with 2024 Write Room residents Amelia Addis and Ebed Pohl alongside established filmmakers Rob Sarkies (Scarfies, Two Little Boys, Out of the Blue) and Duncan Sarkies (Scarfies, Two Little Boys).
How did their partnerships form? What strengths are there working in a team vs writing solo? What are the challenges? What is the role of a director in the writing process and how do you meaningfully support a writer through the process of delivering a draft of a screenplay?
This will also be an opportunity to find out how the Write Room programme works in practice and get first-hand knowledge of what writers gain from the experience, alongside the practical challenges they have each faced in their screenwriting careers so far.
Write Room founders Vicky Pope (Savage, Gardening with Soul) and Rob Sarkies will join the panel to discuss the process of mentoring writers through the program, and their perspective as readers of the applications that come in each year.
Join us all for a drink and chat afterwards.
Applications for the producer internship will be due by 29 July 2024
Applications for the screenwriting residency will due by 21 October 2024.
The 2025 Write Room Screenwriters Residency will take place over March - June 2025
Further details of the program and 2025 application process will be released via the Toi Pōneke website.
