Re-imagining Toi Pōneke

Wed 1 March - Wed 29 March

Through the Aho Tini 2030 Arts, Culture, and Creativity Strategy, developed in collaboration with the creative sector in 2021, Wellington City Council is committed to supporting artists and creative organisations in the city with shared resources.

Council has operated Toi Pōneke Arts Centre since 2005. Since its inception, Toi Pōneke has supported hundreds of artists and organisations, through the provision of 24-hour access to subsidised studios, rehearsal rooms, exhibition space, resources, programmes, and more. It has helped launch many careers and opportunities nationally and internationally.

Much has been achieved at Toi Pōneke but the building has some challenges. It has relatively poor accessibility and, by the nature of its layout, has struggled to facilitate effective collaboration and community networking.

The current lease renewal term on the Toi Pōneke buildings in Abel Smith Street is due in 2025

The ‘Reimagining Toi Pōneke’ Project is reviewing how the service is being used, designing what future fit-for-purpose space(s) could look and feel like, and how it will be operated.

We’d love to hear from you!

We have recently heard from the Toi Pōneke community, and we would now love to hear from the wider Wellington creative sector.

For this project, we are also taking into consideration feedback and thoughts gathered during the Aho Tini 2030 Arts, Culture, and Creativity Strategy creation.

You can see a summary of the issues and opportunities that were highlighted by our engagement phase with the Toi Pōneke community on our Let’s Talk page.

You can provide your thoughts in the following ways:

  1. Participating in one of our inspiring interactive talks, being held in some of our city’s fabulous creative spaces during March – check out the details and registration information here.

  1.  Filling out the Let’s Talk online survey which will help us understand more about your priorities.

  1. Providing ideas on our Let’s Talk page that you do not see represented in the ‘What we’ve heard’ documents on the same page.

If you have any questions you can contact a project team member by emailing arts@wcc.govt.nz

Check out the project timeline on our Let’s Talk page.
