2025 Visual Artist in Residence Announcement

Visual Artist in Residence: Lîm Kado

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is pleased to announce that Lîm Kado has been awarded the 2025 Visual Artist in Residence.

Lîm Kado is a multidisciplinary artist and curator based in Aotearoa, working at the intersection of ritual, memory, and the temporal-spiritual constellations of ma (間). Their practice is grounded in intergenerational knowledge systems - held in body and vanua - and shaped by oceanic lineages across Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa and Te Moana-Nui-a-Inia: currents that stretch from Lau to Nihon, threading islands, languages, and cosmologies across vast waters.

Kado's work traces the politics of remembering and forgetting within diasporic realities, drawing on practices that privilege relationality, fragmentation, and reconfiguration. Their installations and curatorial gestures become sites of cultural negotiation - neither archive nor monument, but something fugitive, sacred, and provisional.
Through embodied practices of retelling, Kado creates microcosms that resist extraction and instead invite engagement grounded in reverence, complexity, and care. Their work does not seek legibility within dominant art historical frameworks, but asserts the sovereignty of Indigenous and global majority worldviews on their own terms. It is a practice of return and refusal - honouring what endures, what shapeshifts, and what refuses capture.

Lîm will be in residence at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre from 23 June 2025 until 26 September 2025.
