East and west Buildings

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is made up of two buildings.

Address:
61/69 Abel Smith Street
Te Aro, Wellington 6011

East Building

The brick-fronted building with artwork on the left (if you were crossing the road looking towards Toi Pōneke / with the tree out front) is what we call the East Building.

The East Building has:

  • Reception

  • Gallery

  • Community Room

  • Studio 30

  • music studios

  • artist studios

  • staff office

  • businesses including Arts Access Aotearoa and Sounz.

Stairs to left and ramp to right - accessible entrance in central driveway.

ramp entry

There are stairs up to the building from the footpath, and a ramp up to the building from the carpark (just a little way down the driveway).

There are two judder bars across the middle of the driveways. See judder bars pictured in West Building ramp picture below.

Pull doors

All doors at Toi Pōneke are pull open doors.

During reception hours, staff can assist with these doors if needed. Please contact us if you would like to ensure someone is on-hand to help upon your arrival.

Receptionist, Matt, stands behind the counter waving.

reception

Reception hours are normally 10am to 8pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm weekends.

Staff here can direct you where to go and assist with doors if you need.

The East Building lifts are located to the left of reception.

Lifts

There is a lift in the East Building – you can access the West Building from Level One via the over-bridge.

Even though there is a lift in the West Building, we wouldn’t recommend using it. It can freeze up when buttons are pushed more than once.

If you need to use the lift and after reception hours – please contact us and we will help work out the easiest way for you to access the building.

Toilets

All toilets at Toi Pōneke are all gender.

Ground floor toilets in both buildings are accessible. The doors into the hallway (which lead to the toilets) are old-school pull doors. The toilet doors are wider here, but still pull open.

Toilets on other floors are stalls – doors are approx. 760mm wide.

There are no toilets on the Basement floor (where music studios are located).

There is a baby change table in the East Building ground floor toilets

Over-bridge

You can access the West Building from Level One via the over-bridge. Enter the East Building and take the lift to level one. When you exit the lift, the over-bridge is straight ahead to the left.

The Upper Chamber is immediately to your left when you come out the other side.

West Building

The cream building on the right (old Education Board Building) is what we call the West Building.

The West Building has:

  • Dance Studio

  • Upper Chamber

  • Meeting Room West

  • Businesses including Workspace Studios

The most accessible floors of the West Building are the ground floor and level one.

Ground floor includes:

  • Dance studio

  • Accessible toilets

  • Kitchenette

Level one includes:

  • Upper chamber

  • Meeting room west

  • Kitchenette

  • Toilets (not accessible)

You can access the East Building via the over-bridge on Level One.

West Building Ramp

There is ramp access to the West Building just a little way down the driveway in between the East and West Buildings.

This door must be accessed with a swipe card - phone reception in advance to arrange entry, or enter via East Building over-bridge.

West Building lift (not recommended)

The West Building has an old style lift – but we recommend you use the lift in the East Building as this one is not reliable.

For further information on individual spaces check out Spaces for Hire page, or contact reception.

There is one accessible park in behind Toi Pōneke next to paid parking.
