The Creative New Zealand/NZSM/Toi Pōneke Sonic Artist-in-Residence is a 3-month full time position for established New Zealand sonic artists to develop a body of work that may include performances, installations, workshops and so forth. The position is funded by Creative New Zealand and Toi Pōneke, with the NZSM and Toi Pōneke as host organisations. A studio space is provided by Toi Pōneke for the duration of the residency, and the Residency will culminate in a 4 week exhibition in June 2025 at Toi Pōneke Gallery.

The candidate will have access to the Lilburn Studios, the Sonic Arts Lab and Library Facilities at the New Zealand School of Music, as well as other NZSM rooms, equipment and resources, depending on the nature of the work undertaken and subject to the availability of these resources.

The successful candidate will be provided with logistical support and assistance publicising the activities associated with the residency. The successful candidate will be provided with a salary of $18,000 (paid fortnightly) from Victoria University of Wellington to help support them during their 12-week residency. There is a research grant of $4,000 which can be used to offset any expenditure associated with the residency and exhibition. At the completion of the residency the successful candidate will be required to provide a report and provide feedback on their residency to the Programme Director (Composition) New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  • Applicants must be established sound artists of proven merit, with a track record of substantial and sustained creative activity. Alongside a strong portfolio of creative work, indicators of merit might include peer esteem, such as awards/prizes, inclusion in festivals, international performances, positive reviews, releases, commissions/invitations from leading organisations, and keynotes/conference presentations. These indicators should be provided in an accompanying CV.

  • Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or have a New Zealand resident visa, be Wellington-based at the time of application, and be intending to live in New Zealand for at least one year after they complete the residency. Applicants may not be enrolled at the New Zealand School of Music or be on a teaching contract from VUW during the period of the residency. Applicants should not intend to engage in other substantial external employment contracts or study during the period of the residency, though smaller contracts such as performances/gigs etc. are allowed.

  • Preference will be shown to candidates that propose projects seeking interaction with the New Zealand School of Music, other Toi Pōneke residents, and most importantly the greater Wellington art community and general public.

Terms and conditions

The successful applicant will be hired as a Victoria University of Wellington employee for the period of the residency, and will be required to submit a written report to the Programme Director (Composition) within one month of the end of the tenure. The gross salary for the position will be NZ$18,000 for the three-month (12-week) period, which includes 8% holiday pay to be paid when the term of appointment ends.

Successful applicants will be required to:

•         Sign a Victoria University Employee Agreement

•         Sign the Toi Pōneke /NZSM Residency Agreement

•         Agree to the Toi Pōneke Arts Centre Artist Studio Agreement

•         Sign the Toi Pōneke Exhibition Pack agreement.

selection process

The selection committee will comprise at least 3 members of the staff of the NZSM and Toi Pōneke, plus two external experts.  The committee will base their decision on the artistic standards and track record of the applicant, as evidenced through a CV and portfolio of representative works, as well as the potential of the proposed work, both in terms of its artistic vision and its engagement with the sound arts community in Wellington and beyond. In addition, shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview with the appointment panel to articulate their vision for the proposed work.

 [SP1]Thomas and I discussed the panel would be probably be Thomas, Dugal and Sally Jane plus 2 externals - Mark Williams and Flo Wilson or if Flo's not available an ex resident artist. We would like to keep gender equity top of mind on this panel.
