Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is delighted to announce Kaysee Savali as the Dance Development resident for 2023. Kaysee will be in residence from 1 May - 4 June working with her mentor Tupe Lualua.
Kaysee Savali (Faleula, Nofoali'i, Vailima, Samoa) has been selected for her project The Wave of a Woman
Kaysee is a dancer, choreographer and DJ based in Wellington. Most of her work as a dancer has been with More Than Moves one of Wellington’s top Hip-Hop dance companies. Since entering the scene, Savali has performed in multiple shows including, ‘Grey,’ ‘Spotlight 6’ (2017), ‘Spotlight 7,’ (2018), 'Talk2Me' (2019), ‘Godspeed', 2021) and choreographed for Visual Artist Katherine Atafu-Mayo, ‘Activating the Moana,’ (2019).
In 2021, Kaysee co-founded 6ixHand, one of Wellington's first Pasifika DJ collectives, focussed on uplifting local musicians and bringing people together with music. Most recently Savali performed in Le Moana’s annual Measina Makers LAB, in ‘Here and Now,’ (2022) choreographed by Christopher ‘Ofanoa. Since then, Savali has joined the up and coming Wellington Pasifika Dance Collective, Shifting Centre.
The Toi Pōneke Dance Development Residency is an opportunity open to one choreographer/dancer who receives 25hrs a week for 5 weeks in the Toi Pōneke Dance Studio (May - June 2023) to develop a new dance work alongside our resident emerging production designer. They will receive a stipend to rehearse and will present an industry - only showing at the end of the residency. They will have access to a paid mentor.
It is envisaged that the choreographer can then apply for other funding – Creative Communities, WCC or CNZ arts grants and apply to NZ Fringe or other later in the year for the presentation stage of this work.
