Marquetry is the art of ‘drawing’ with wood veneers, cutting intricate jigsaws of imagery and inlaying in, or onto timbers. In three hours have a go at exploring the different veneers, get to know the chisels and knives, and create your own ‘take home’ block (or coaster) having discovered the fundamentals to take it further.
For ages 16 and above only, must be able to use small hand tools safely - all tools and materials provided.
As part of the workshop Rick Allender will be giving a short presentation of his creative process titled: Behind the Scenes.
Workshop limited to 10 spaces only. Bookings essential.

Katy Cottrell
Artist Biographies
Katy Cottrell specialised in marquetry in her Masters of Fine Art and is New Zealand’s youngest and only female member of the Marquetry Society. Katy has exhibited and presented on marquetry across Wellington, and is currently doing a doctorate about marquetry through Victoria University of Wellington. .
Rick Allender
Rick Allender is a marquetry artist who lives in Auckland/ Tāmaki Makaurau. In his practice, Rick’s experience as a cinematographer brings a sense of interpretation, organisation, composition, texture and lighting. His artistic approach and interests are now focused on hand crafted contemporary marquetry and collage using wood veneer combined with other materials.
