Louise Hill and Keri-Mei Zagrobelna

To coincide with her exhibition In Each Other’s Pockets, Kapeu artist-in-residence Louise Hill will be in conversation with fellow artist Keri-Mei Zagrobelna (Te Ati Awa, Whānau-a-Apanui).

In discussion with Keri-Mei, Louise will reflect on the politics of pockets — the private spaces that shape how we move through the world, investigating what it means for some to be equipped with the tools they need, while others are not.

Artists Biographies

Louise Hill is a Wellington-based contemporary jeweller whose work blends humour, bold colour, and sharp social commentary. Working with a wide range of materials, she creates playful pieces that question everyday habits and cultural expectations, particularly around clothing, bodies, and gender. Since graduating from Whitireia in 2020, Louise has exhibited across Aotearoa and is currently artist in residence at Workspace Studios in Toi Pōneke Arts Centre, Wellington. Her practice has a feisty, energetic spirit that invites audiences to think differently about the objects they wear and carry.

Keri-Mei Zagrobelna (Te Āti Awa & Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) graduated from Whitireia with a BaPPa in visual arts and comes from a background entwined in museums and art. Currently working from her Pōneke (Wellington) based studio she also holds a history of lecturing, public art commissions, art mentoring and is a jewellery tutor. Her work aesthetic represents the connectedness to her immediate environment, whakapapa and upbringing. It speaks of cultural communication and interpersonal relationships through the language of art.

“Art and Creativity is a medium by which I can communicate my heritage to both local and global audiences. I seek to nurture and encourage others through my work, by way of my actions and choices as an artist.” - KZ

“I use art as my language and speak through my hands. My eyes hear my thoughts and translate.” - KZ

In Each Other’s Pockets opens Friday 24 October 2025 at Toi Pōneke Gallery, Te Aro, Wellington.

Through her playful installation, contemporary jeweller Louise Hill interrogates the politics of pockets; the private spaces that shape how we move through the world, investigating what it means for some to be equipped with the tools they need, while others are not.
