Tasman Kaitara

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre are delighted to announce Tasman Kaitara as the recipient for the 2024 Dance Development Residency.

Tasman will be in residence from the 6 May - 9 June working on a short dance film. He will be collaborating with dancer Byrin Mita, designer Isadora Lao and videographer Havea Latu. He will be mentored by Sefa Tunupopo.

Tasman (he/they) is an artist from the islands of Tamana, Onotoa, Marakei, and Tarawa, in Tungaru (Kiribati). Their work focuses on movement, sound, and visuals to connect with communities and experiences. As a member of Shifting Centre, they have contributed to the group’s feature-length self-titled theatre show at the Kia Mau festival, directed by Oto Lupo and Sefa Tunupopo. Their involvement in the short film ‘That Which Binds Us’ directed by Oto Lupo, Sefa Tunupopo, and Havea Latu, was instrumental in its success, winning both the ‘Audience Choice’ and ‘Best Grassroots Film’ awards at the Aotearoa Street Dance Film Festival. Additionally, their participation in ‘Show Do Cafè’ directed by Stela Dara, contributed to its recognition as ‘Best in Fringe’ at this year’s Fringe Festival in Pōneke.
