2023 Emerging Production Designer Resident announcement

Asha Barr Emerging Production Designer Resident 2023

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is delighted to announce Asha Barr as the Emerging Production Designer Resident for 2023. Asha will be in residence from 8 May - 11 June working with her mentor Helen Todd.

Asha Barr is a Pōneke raised live and screen performance designer/maker. She is a recent graduate of Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School with a Bachelor of Design. (Stage and Screen)

She recently designed for Freestyle in Shades of Yellow by Ben Ashby and Nadiyah Akbar in NZ Fringe and for U R Here by Barbarian Productions.

In her work, Asha combines an anarchic imagination with a precise technical eye. In process, she values deep collaborative relationships and the unique artistic languages that it brings. Asha is an advocate for braveness, curiosity and connection with her practice.

The emerging production designer residency, is an opportunity for a designer working in areas of Set Design for Dance Theatre. They receive access to a studio at Toi Pōneke and a research and development stipend for 5 weeks, to develop a new project with our resident choreographer - Kaysee Savali, over May/June 2023. They will also have access to a paid design mentor.
