Greta Menzies outside Toi Pōneke Arts Centre

AĒ / YES by Greta Menzies at Toi Pōneke

ĀE / YES is a new artwork by Greta Menzies installed at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre on Abel Smith Street. The artwork unfolds as a series of tiles across the building. The tiles contain symbols representing both the individual and the collaborative creative happenings inside Toi Pōneke.  The visual language of symbols on tiles that could be rearranged and matched together was inspired from a tile-matching game Menzies’ had as a child.

Menzies designed this artwork in 2020 during level 2 and 3 when we were all still separated into our own spaces, and when a lot of people found refuge and comfort in the arts. 

The text, AĒ / YES within the artwork, is a hopeful statement, an encouragement, a permission, an affirmation to the community.
