Toi Pōneke The Hub space

Hand made quilt by Ruby Joy Eade

Hand made quilt by Ruby Joy Eade

To quilt is to archive. Many museums began collecting domestic quilts, not for the importance to the piecing, stitching and design - but for the variety of the fabrics included in them. Through the quilting stitch, three layers become one, and many small pieces come together to create something both beautiful and functional.

The tools of hand quilting are very simple, fabric, a needle and thread, a straight stitch, in and out. Learn how to make a small panel using hand quilting and patchwork skills.

Participants will create a small patchwork panel, prepare it for quilting, and begin to hand quilt it.

In the workshop we will talk and learn about the history of quilting and patchwork and the materials used in their creation.

All materials provided, though participants are encouraged to bring in a piece of fabric or textile of their own to include in their work.

Bring fabric scissors if you have them

Sunday 8 August, 11am – 1pm. The Hub, Toi Pōneke. $15 entry (subsidised rate)
