Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is pleased to announce that painter Maisie Chilton is the recipient of its 2025 d/Deaf and/or Disabled Artist Development Residency.
Pōneke/Wellington based artist and poet Maisie Chilton approaches art-making in an urgent way to address and accept aspects of her lived experiences as a trauma survivor living with Cerebral Palsy. A self- taught artist, Maisie actively processes and heals psychological and physical tensions through her art practice. Her work explores the intersection of trauma, disability and radical vulnerability. Her work is motivated by the urge to heal and process complex experiences via the mediums of painting and poetry. Maisie’s work invites us into the depths of her own psyche and welcomes our engagement, creating a safe place where we can share, examine and explore our own personal histories and experiences.
In 2021 Maisie was awarded The Springboard Award by The Arts foundation Te Tumu Toi identifying her as an emerging New Zealand artist with outstanding potential.
She has previously exhibited her paintings at Peep Gallery in Palmerston North and at Bowen Gallery and Toi Pōneke Gallery in Wellington.
While on residency at Toi Pōneke, Maisie will be working towards an exhibition in her home town of Invercargill in June of this year.
Maisie Chilton will be in residence at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre from 17 February to 13 April 2025.
