Mechen was the inaugural recipient of the Toi Pōneke Visual Arts Residency in 2018.

Project date range: 1 July - 8 December 2019

Submissions due by 12 midnight Monday 1 April 2019

Toi Pōneke is calling for proposals from Wellington-based Visual Artists for our 2019 Visual Arts Residency. This 13 week residency culminates in an exhibition of a new body of work at Toi Pōneke Gallery in November 2019.

The aim of this residency is to support an artist to develop a body of work and provide them with resources to dedicate themselves full time to their practice for a period of 13 weeks.

Applicants need to have had previous experience of a mounting a solo exhibition and be looking to develop their practice further.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview with Toi Pōneke staff before a final decision is made.

What’s on Offer:

  • Toi Pōneke will provide the candidate with a small studio space to work for 13 weeks with 24/7 access from July – end of September 2019.

  • A 4 week exhibition at Toi Pōneke Gallery, this includes  pack in & pack out (3.5 weeks open to the public)

  • Mentoring

  • Promotion of the candidate’s exhibition and associated activities

  • A stipend for the 13-weeks whilst the artist is in residence

  • Technical and hosting support for their exhibition

Eligibility:

  • Available only to current Wellington-based New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

  • Applicants recently graduated from a Post Graduate course are eligible to apply

  • Applicants  must have had a solo exhibition in a public gallery or artist run space

  • Applicants must be able to commit to this residency full time (spend at least 40 hours a week at Toi Pōneke) and install their own exhibition

  • Employees of Wellington City Council are not eligible to apply

  • Artists within one year of finishing under-graduate study are not eligible to apply.

  • A requirement of this residency is to gift an artwork to Toi Pōneke

Timeline:

  • Submissions due by 12 midnight Monday 1 April 2019

  • Interview date range: 15 – 19 April

  • Successful artist announced May 2019

  • Residency Commences: Monday 1 July 2019

  • Residency finishes: Sunday 29 September 2019

Exhibition:

  • Exhibition Install: 11 – 14 November

  • Opening: 5:30pm Thursday 14 November

  • Exhibition Dates: 15 November – 7 December

  • De-install: Sunday 8 December

  • Public Programme: date and time to be discussed with Toi Pōneke staff

  • Report due: 16 December

These dates are non-negotiable

Your Application should comprise of:

  • Application Form (link below)

  • Short 2 page Visual Arts Resume

  • Minimum of 10 images of recent work A5 size, with captions and a short description if necessary. Make sure to include some documentation of your previous exhibitions so we can see the scale of your work and how it is presented.

  • Please provide links to any relevant documentation (e.g. articles or papers about work, exhibitions, publications, etc.)

  • Sign the Toi Pōneke - Visual Arts Residency Agreement;

  • Agree to the Toi Pōneke Arts Centre Terms and Conditions;

  • Complete a Toi Pōneke Arts Centre Artist Studio Application;

  • Agree to the Toi Pōneke Arts Centre Artist Studio Agreement.
