Understanding Te Tiriti o Waitangi Workshops at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre
Gain an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to work effectively within your community. In this workshop, you will gain an appreciation of the context, intentions and on-going significance of the treaty.
We have both a 1 day or a 3hr workshop option. We are working with Engaging Well and Groundwork: Facilitating Change to deliver these workshops.
The workshops will cover:
why we have a Treaty, what it says, the differences between the Māori and English text.
the impact Te Tiriti/ the Treaty breaches on the Māori way of life including traditional Māori systems and processes of law and governance.
the relevance and application of Te Tiriti for you as an artist including how you can give effect to Te Tiriti in your work.
Groundwork: Facilitating Change
Groundwork: Facilitating Change’s skilled and knowledgeable facilitators enjoy working with individuals and organisations to support understanding and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Groundwork’s clients include: Ministry of Education, Auckland Council, Queenstown Lakes District Council, MidCentral DHB, PHARMAC, Zealandia, Ākina, Parent Help and Greenpeace.
Groundwork is led by Jen Margaret (Pākehā) who has been active in Treaty education for over 20 years. Jen is the author of Working as allies: supporters of indigenous justice reflect and Ngā Rerenga o Te Tiriti: community organisations engaging with the Treaty of Waitangi. “Jen Margaret is a leader in her field. She brings clarity, confidence and results to organisations seeking a way to operationalise Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Her writings on working as an ally of indigenous peoples, have provided invaluable insight for our staff seeking to engage in a respectful and purposeful manner

Engaging Well
Hone Hurihanganui and Aperahama Hurihanganui, father and son, are Engaging Well Ltd™.
Through the Engaging Effectively with Māori programme, we provide professional development opportunities to people from all walks of life. We specialise in providing education, training, mentoring and advice in Cultural Competence, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori and the composition and tutoring of waiata, haka, karakia and other Māori cultural expressions.
Aperahama Hurihanganui studied at the University of Waikato where he attained a Bachelor of Law (with First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts in Māori Language and Māori Cultural Studies. Aperahama is a qualified lawyer and practised at Kāhui Legal from 2016-2019, a specialist law firm working at the forefront of Māori development. He brings his legal knowledge and skills to our services coupled with his experience and upbringing in te āo Māori (the Māori world).
Outside of work, Aperahama enjoys spending time with friends and family, keeping fit and healthy, playing social and competitive sports, participating in cultural activities and diving for kaimoana (seafood).
