A solo dance by two bodies.

Performers Bianca Hyslop and Paige Shand will co-inhabit the gallery space to perform a live activation through the modality of dance. A performance that has been crafted specifically for the installation: Te Mauri o Pōhutu. Artworks by Bianca Hyslop, Rowan Pierce and Tūī Matira Ranapiri Ransfield.

Artist Biographies:

Bianca Hyslop & Rowan Pierce

Bianca Hyslop (Te Arawa, Ngāti Whakaue, Tūhourangi) and multi award winning artist Rowan Pierce are practitioners at the forefront of their respective fields of contemporary dance/movement and performance design/live art. Based in Aotearoa, both artists have extensive experience and have gained success working independently as well as with top performing arts companies in Aotearoa and abroad. Companies include Atamira Dance Company, Movement of The Human, New Zealand Dance Company, Okareka Dance Company and World of Wearable Arts. This new collaborative partnership is self-produced and together the pair create work that pushes beyond any one form of performing arts practice. Their work is an immersive performance experience that utilises various forms of storytelling including image, movement, sound, spatial/object design and beyond. This results in a universal performative language that defy’s genres and opens up live performance experience to new and broader audiences.

Tūī Matira Ranapiri-Ransfield
Tūī Matira Ranapiri-Ransfield:Mātanga Mātauranga Māori/ Researcher/ Composer
Tūī is a descendent of Ohomairangi and Makuratawhiti of the Ngāti Ohomairangi people. She hails from the vessels: Te Arawa, Tainui, Mataatua, Arai-te-uru-, Tākitimu, Manuka, Kurahaupō. A highly skilled Māori performing artist, Tūī specialises in Māori weaponry particularly with patu. Tūī is a composer, tutor and first leader of Te Matarae-i-Ōrehu. Over last 20+ years she has been a judge for Maori performing art forms from Primary through to tertiary level including senior regionals to Te Matatini. Tūī has been active in the role of Mātanga Mātauranga Māori – Cultural Advisor and Consultant for a range of diverse Contemporary Dance Projects including Bianca Hyslop and Rowan Pierce’s Pōhutu, Movement of the Humans ‘Meremere’, Okareka’s ‘Mana Wahine’ and ‘Hōkioi/Wõhali’ and most recently working alongside Tuatara collective’s, ‘Over My Dead Body’.

Paige Shand (Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi) 

Dancer/model and actress Paige Shane graduated the New Zealand School of Dance in 2014. She has since worked with Tawata Productions, Taki Rua Productions, Aotearoa Aerial Theatre Company, Footnote New Zealand Dance, Atamira Dance Company and Black Grace, touring both nationally and internationally across North America. Paige is a model and dancer with World of WearableArt Awards Show performing in New Zealand and China. She was also the ballet coach for the role of Billy Elliot in ‘Billy Elliot The Musical’ as well as a soloist for the World Peace Foundation. In 2019 Paige moved to Paris to dance full time at the legendary cabaret company ‘Le Crazy Horse de Paris’, where she continues to work and became the Crazy Girl ‘Lola Kashmir’.
