Whakairo by Whareahuru Gilbert 

Come into the gallery to see toi whakairo (the art of carving) in action by Whareahuru Gilbert. Hailing from Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Tama, he was born and raised in Waiwhetu, Lower Hutt and now lives in Gisborne with his wife and four sons. He is one of the artists featured in the Aho Hononga exhibition, where he is exhibiting some of his recent whakairo.

Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Toarangatira, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Tama.

Tēnā tātou ngā waka tapu o te motu. 

Whareahuru Gilbert is currently a tauira of whakairo under the watchful tutelage of Master Carver Tiopira Rauna at Te Kura Whakairo o Te Anga Ake based at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Whirikoka campus in Te Tairāwhiti.  He has been carving part time for 4 years and has recently increased his carving hours to take on more mahi, on the path to achieving his ambition of becoming a full time carver.

Te Wharetoi o Toi Pōneke (Toi Pōneke Arts Centre) presents Aho Hononga: a six-week special exhibition to celebrate mana whenua ringatoi of Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
