Dance Development Residency 2024 – Call for Applications

Residency runs from Mon 29 April – Sunday 2 June (5weeks)

This opportunity is open to one Wellington based choreographer who will receive 25hrs a week for 5 weeks in the Toi Pōneke Dance Studio (April - June 2023) to develop a new dance work alongside our resident emerging production designer and a cast/ crew of up to two. The cast/crew could be made up of dancers and or videographer/photographer. The choreographer and crew will receive a stipend to rehearse and will present to an industry - only showing at the end of the residency. The choreographer will also have access to a paid mentor. (A choreographer, Dramaturg or Director.)

It is envisaged that the choreographer can then apply for other funding – Creative Communities, WCC or CNZ arts grants and apply to NZ Fringe or other later in the year for the presentation stage of this work.

Choreographer Stipend for 5 weeks $3750

Extra Dancer/ cast or crew (maximum two people) stipend up to $3318 each depending on hours

Mentor Stipend $800

Eligibility

 Applicants must be:

  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

  • Wellington based emerging choreographer/dancer – freelance.

  • Undergraduate students are in eligible to apply. Preference will be shown to candidates that propose projects that are innovative and to a professional standard.

  • Currently residing in Wellington City* and be intending to live in Wellington for at least one year after they complete the residency.

* Wellington City based New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. You must provide evidence that you have lived in Wellington City on a semi-permanent basis over the past 3 years. And you must have a current Wellington City address at the time of application. If you are short listed you will be required to verify this address and your NZ residency status.
