Toi Pōneke Arts Centre are pleased to announce our 2024 Dance Development Residency, with a call for submissions.

Residency Dates

29 April – 2 June 2024

What’s on offer

This opportunity is open to one Wellington based choreographer who will receive 25hrs a week for 5 weeks in the Toi Pōneke Dance Studio (May - June 2023) to develop a new dance work alongside our resident emerging production designer and a cast/ crew of up to 2. The cast/crew could be made up of dancers and or videographer/photographer. The choreographer and crew will receive a stipend to rehearse and will present to an industry - only showing at the end of the residency. The choreographer will also have access to a paid mentor. (A choreographer, Dramaturg or Director.)

It is envisaged that the choreographer can then apply for other funding – Creative Communities, WCC or CNZ arts grants and apply to NZ Fringe or other later in the year for the presentation stage of this work.

Choreographer Stipend for 5 weeks $3750

Extra Dancer/ cast or crew stipend up to $3318 each depending on hours

Mentor Stipend $800

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

  • Wellington based choreographer/dancer. Preference will be shown to candidates that propose projects that are innovative and to a professional standard.

  • Currently residing in Wellington City* and intending to live in New Zealand for at least one year after they complete the residency.

*Wellington City based New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. You must provide evidence that you have lived in Wellington City on a semi-permanent basis over the past 3 years. And you must have a current Wellington City address at the time of application. If you are shortlisted you will be required to verify this address and your NZ residency status.

Applications close Wednesday 28 February at 11pm

The successful candidate will be announced mid March 2024

Assessment

An independent panel appointed by Toi Pōneke Arts Centre will select the successful candidate.

Selection criteria will include:

  • A specific rationale for wishing to be the Toi Pōneke Choreographer/Dancer in resident.

  • The quality and significance of the proposed dance work and how it relates to the strategic outcomes of Aho Tini - Wellington City Councils Arts and Cultural Strategy

  • Ability to develop networks and work collaboratively.

Terms and conditions

Successful applicants will be required to sign the Toi Pōneke Dance Development Residency Agreement before any payments are made.

Applications will include, in this order:

  1. A CV and a 250 word biography.

  2. Written rationale, to include the following:

    ·         Conceptual, research focus, ideas behind your work and process

    ·          Physical and or technical ideas to focus on and test during residency

    ·         A brief statement about the potential outcomes of this residency and what receiving this opportunity would mean to you.

  3. Video examples of your work. Please post these examples online and provide links within your application form. You can include some still images too if this supports your application.

  4. Suggested Wellington based mentors. Your mentor could be a choreographer, dramaturg or director.

  5. CV and short biography of dancer/s or videographer you intend to collaborate with.

  6. A statement talking about how your project fits with Aho Tini, Wellington City Council’s Art, Culture and Creativity Strategy.
