Louise Hill

25 October - 20 November

In Each Other’s Pockets opens on Friday 24 October 2025 at Toi Pōneke Gallery, Te Aro, Wellington.
Through playful installation, contemporary jeweller Louise Hill examines the politics of pockets; the private spaces that shape the way we move through the world. Through her interactive installation Hill, explores what it means for some bodies to be equipped with tools they need, while others are not.

By highlighting the absurdity of clothing designed with fake or inadequate pockets for women, her work reveals how design decisions are never neutral. To have a pocket is to have freedom, privacy and readiness - to be denied one is to be told you won’t be needing that.

Pockets hold tools, money and agency, but they are also intimate, concealed spaces - glimpses into our private worlds and fragile identities. Once a focus of the suffragette movement, pockets remain symbols of autonomy and freedom. In Each Other’s Pockets insists that the politics of pockets, and the gendered hierarchies they uphold, are as urgent today as they were a century ago.
