Toi Pōneke presents the first in our series of Wāhine Wānanga.

Join us for a kai and korero in a wāhine focused space, with a presentation by  wāhine toa Tu Chapman. Tu is an advocate for change, a proven thought leader on issues relating to applied indigenous approaches in Te Āo Māori, Tikanga Māori, Social Justice and Wellbeing & Development.

Tu Chapman (she/her)

Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Taranaki whānui

 Kei aku nui, kei aku rahi, e rau rangatira mā, tēnā tātou katoa

 Tu is an advocate for change, a proven thought leader on issues relating to applied indigenous approaches in Te Āo Māori, Tikanga Māori, Social Justice and Wellbeing & Development.

 Tu is a survivor of abuse in state care and lobbied for the recent Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the care of Faith-based Institutions. Aotearoa largest and longest running inquiry which began in 2018 and ended in 2024. She went on to establish a listening service with the inquiry that provided a space for survivors to share their experiences for evidential purposes. She held the role of Chief Advisor to Chief Commissioner Judge Coral Shaw and departed that role in 2021 and took up an Iwi Engagement role with Te Puni Kōkiri. Tu finished there in 2024.

 Tu is passionate about enacting and informing better processes that allow hāpori Māori to grow and thrive. Tu identifies as Ira Tangata (Intersex) and she has spent nearly her entire lifetime fighting to understand what it means to belong, and the importance that whakapapa Māori has on identity.

 Tu has a strong professional background in strategic, Operational and Senior/Executive Advisory roles as well as a stable history on Governance Advisory Boards at National and Region.
