Toi Pōneke is calling for proposals from Wellington-based Artists for our 2020 Visual Arts Residency. This 12 week residency culminates in an exhibition of a new body of work at Toi Pōneke Gallery in November 2020.

The aim of this residency is to support a Wellington-based Visual artist to develop a new body of work, and provide the artist with resources to dedicate themselves full time to their practice for a period of 12 weeks.

The Toi Pōneke Visual Arts Residency for 2020 marks the third year of this opportunity. Applicants should have had previous experience of a solo exhibition or project in a public or artist run space and be looking to develop and expand on their practice. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview with a selection panel before a final decision is made.

What’s on Offer

  • Toi Pōneke will provide the candidate with a studio space to work for 12 weeks with 24/7 access from Aug – end of November 2020

  • A four week exhibition at Toi Pōneke Gallery, this includes pack in & pack out (3.5 weeks open to the public)

  • Mentoring and guidance in preparation for the exhibition

  • Promotion of the candidate’s exhibition and associated activities

  • A stipend of $6450.00 (gross) for the 12 weeks whilst the artist is in residence

  • An exhibition materials grant of $500 (net)

  • Technical and hosting support towards the exhibition

Eligibility

  • Available only to current Wellington-based New Zealand citizens or permanent residents(applicants must be living in Wellington)

  • Applicants must have had a solo exhibition or project in a public or artist run space

  • Applicants must be able to commit to this residency full time and spend at least 25 hours per week at the Toi Pōneke studio

  • Manage and install their own exhibition

  • Employees of Wellington City Council are not eligible to apply

  • There is no living accommodation offered, recipients will have organised their own living accommodation

  • Duos, groups and collectives can apply for this opportunity but please note that the budget is set

  • A requirement of this residency is to gift an artwork created during the residency to Toi Pōneke

Requirements

This Residency has the outcome of an exhibition at Toi Pōneke Gallery.

The successful artist must deliver an exhibition and at least one public programme within the residency timeframe and before the exhibition ends.

At the completion of the residency the successful candidate will be required to provide a report and feedback on their residency to Toi Pōneke.

At the beginning of the residency the artist must schedule two progress meetings with Toi Pōneke during their residency and lead up to their exhibition.

Timeline

  • Submissions due by midnight Sunday 23 February 2020

  • Interview date range: March 2020

  • Successful artist announced: April 2020

  • A residency agreement and exhibition pack meeting prior to commencement of residency July 2020

  • Residency Commences: Monday 17 August 2020

  • Residency finishes: Sunday 8 November 2020

  • Exhibition Install: 9-13 November

  • Opening: 5:30pm Friday 13 November

  • Exhibition Dates:14 November – 5 December

  • De-install: Sunday 6 December

  • Public Programme: date and time to be discussed with Toi Pōneke staff

  • Residency Report due: Monday 14 December 2020

  • Short 2 page Visual Arts Resume; please include any upcoming opportunities you have lined up for 2020

  • Please list two referees: name, position, phone number and email address

  • One letter of support

  • Minimum of 10 images of recent work A5 size, with captions and a short description if necessary. Make sure to include some documentation of your previous exhibitions/projects so we can see the scale of your work and how it is presented.

  • Please provide links to any relevant documentation (e.g. articles or papers about work, exhibitions, publications, etc.)
