What’s on offer
This is an opportunity for an emerging Wellington based production designer, working in areas of Set Design for Dance Theatre. They will receive access to a studio at Toi Pōneke and a research and development stipend for 25 hrs a week for 5 weeks, to develop a new project with our resident choreographer over April/June 2023. They will have the opportunity to present to an industry-only showing at the end of the residency. They will also have access to a paid design mentor. (Mentor could be from the Lighting, Sound or Set Design industry)
Production Designer Stipend for 5 weeks $3,750
Materials fee $500
Mentor stipend $800 for 4 sessions including industry showing feedback
Eligibility
Applicants must be:
New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
Wellington based designer.
Preference will be shown to candidates that propose projects that are innovative and to a professional standard.
Currently residing in Wellington City* and intending to live in New Zealand for at least one year after they complete the residency.
*Wellington City based New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. You must provide evidence that you have lived in Wellington City on a semi-permanent basis over the past 3 years. And you must have a current Wellington City address at the time of application. If you are shortlisted you will be required to verify this address and your NZ residency status.

Assessment
An independent panel appointed by Toi Pōneke Arts Centre will select the successful candidate.
Selection criteria will include:
A specific rationale for wishing to be the Toi Pōneke emerging production designer in resident.
The quality and significance of the proposed work.
Ability to develop networks and work collaboratively.
Terms and conditions
Successful applicants will be required to sign the Toi Pōneke Residency Agreement before any payments are made.

A CV and a 250 word biography and a photograph of the applicant.
Written rationale, to include the following:
Concepts and physical, technical ideas for the proposed design research work.
A brief statement about the potential outcomes of this residency and what receiving this opportunity would mean to the applicant.
At least 3 images of recent work that reflects your practice. Images should reflect how your work has been presented in performances and/or events you have worked on. You can also include Video examples of your work. Please post these examples online, and provide links within your application form.
Suggested Wellington based mentors. Your mentor could be from the Lighting, Sound or Set Design industry.
Write a statement about how your project aligns to Aho Tini - Wellington City Council’s Arts and Cultural Strategy.(see application form for prompts)
